Who was Nelson Mandela?
Nelson Mandela was a civil rights leader in South Africa. He fought against apartheid, a system where non-white citizens were segregated from whites and did not have equal rights. He served a good portion of his life in prison for his protests, but became a symbol for his people. Nelson Mandela became an important figure in the ANC, and he helped set up and lead a section for young people called the ANC Youth League. He later travelled the country to gain support for non-violent protests against the National Party's racist laws, too.

How has Nelson Mandela influenced others?
After retiring as president, Mandela worked to educate people about the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa. He also helped broker peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi. Decades before the end of Apartheid, Mandela also served as an inspiration for civil rights movements around the world, including in the US. After 27 years in prison, he improved the living standards and facilities for South Africa's black people, and brought peace to a racially divided country and lead the fight for human rights around the world.

Mandela fought for the freedom of himself and others, whether it involved physical violence and verbal. He stood up for the people and couldn’t and fought for what everyone deserved. Mandela was so dedicated to bringing justice, he served many long, hard years in prison. He became such an important man in history and a leading political prisoner. Mandela spent his whole life being a leader. Not only did Mandela spend his whole life being a strong political leader, he also fought for the freedom of his people and to bring them the rights they deserve.
